In 2010, Mexico will commemorate the bicentennial of its Independence movement and the centennial of its Revolution with an extensive program of events. All Mexicans and foreign citizens alike are invited to participate in these events to learn about and reflect on Mexico’s past.

documentary, the film tells the story of a young boy whose divorced parents (an
Italian mother and Mexican father) make him a child of two worlds. The
strikingly handsome Jorge – muscled, tattooed and mustachioed – transports his
urban son to this natural paradise to teach him to dive for lobster, and fish
for barracuda, spending days on a tiny fishing boat and nights in a reed-roofed
cabin that floats atop the water.

Natalia Almada's film El General premiering on PBS

2010 10PM As the subject of his great granddaughter’s intimate poetic
essay, General Plutarco Elías Calles—the controversial revolutionary and
president of Mexico from 1924 to 1928—is the perfect vehicle to reflect
on how memory and history are constructed, offering a unique
opportunity to reconcile personal memories with an ongoing national
debate. Winner of a documentary directing award at this year’s Sundance
Film Festival.

Los Cenzontles
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 7PM Los Cenzontles (Nahuatl for "the mockingbirds") dig deep into Latino traditions to promote dignity, pride, and cultural understanding. The group has pioneered revivals of Mexican roots music in California, bringing traditions to new generations. The Mockingbirds now create a powerful new hybrid sound using a fresh Chicano voice.
