Feature Film 7 SUNS / 7 SOLES Will Have its U.S. Premiere
at the 2008 New York Latino International Film Festival

The Debut Film by Director Pedro Ultreras Is a Gripping and Timely Story
that Depicts the Odyssey of Undocumented Migrants in Search for a Better Future

Thursday, July 24 & Sunday, July 27, 2008

The US/Mexico co-production 7 SUNS / 7 SOLES, which marks the feature film debut of writer-director Pedro Ultreras, will have its U.S. Premiere as part of the Official Selection of the 2008 New York Latino International Film Festival to be held July 22-27.

7 SUNS / 7 SOLES tells the story of "Negro" (Gustavo Sánchez Parra) who gets hired to smuggle a group of undocumented migrants into the United States. He wants out of the smuggling business and claims this will be his last trip. His superiors, now suspicious, send Gavilán, a younger smuggler, to keep an eye on him. During the troubled crossing that lasts seven days across the Arizona desert, the smugglers fight and eventually lose part of their human "cargo."  "Negro" now finds himself on the run –from his former associates and the law.

The inspiration for filmmaker Pedro Ultreras, who has a journalism background, was to portrait the odyssey that undocumented migrants experience, as he believes few people are fully aware of it. "Despite the fact that there's press coverage on immigration issues almost on a daily basis, as a field reporter I saw many outrageous and terrible things that the newscasts don't show," says Ultreras, "I wanted to offer a more human and more realistic depiction that we generally see on TV."

The film, which is totally based in real cases, stars Gustavo Sánchez Parra who took by surprise the Mexican film scene with his powerful interpretation as "Jarocho" in Alejandro González Iñárritu's acclaimed debut feature Amores Perros (2000) and will be seen in the upcoming film Rabia produced by Guillermo del Toro, and Evangelina Sosa who despite her young age, is a seasoned actor that has worked with some of Mexico's most important filmmakers.

About the filmmaker: Pedro Ultreras, born in Durango, Mexico, has been a news reporter for the Hispanic Television in the U.S. for over 16 years, and has been nominated to the Television Emmy Awards three times. As a journalist he as assigned to cover numerous national and international news events in the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. He recently left journalism to pursue a career in film and currently lives in New York City. 7 SUNS / 7 SOLES is the first feature film writes and directs.
