![]() New York’s Latino theatre for children is proud to present our latest production: ¡Viva Pinocho! - A Mexican Pinocchio! December 4-13, 2009 Pregones Theater ![]() Actor, Director and Producer, Manuel Antonio Morán, founder of the award winning Latino theatre for children, TEATRO SEA, celebrates his 25 years on stage, with the premiere of the theatrical production, ¡Viva Pinocho!, a Mexican Pinocchio. ¡Viva Pinocho! is a new adaptation of the classic folktale Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, and this time, it’s told from the perspective of a young Mexican immigrant; a boy made of wood that sets off on a journey to find his true self, all the while struggling to not lose his Latin roots in a new and different land (the United States.) For more than two decades, SEA, a not-for-profit arts education and community arts organization dedicated to serving Latino children and families, has used puppetry as a tool to provide training and access to culturally relevant arts programming. We have 20+ puppetry theatre works in repertory, many of which are Latinized versions from various parts of Latin America and Spain of classic world folktales. Each show addresses cultural differences and offers audiences new ways of seeing themselves and their world. “Teatro SEA will be presenting this show for family audiences with a socio-political theme, which will explore the subject of immigration and social justice,” from Dr. Morán. To tell the story in new and visually exciting ways, the show will employ many techniques, including masks, marionettes, shadow puppets and animation, direct manipulation puppets, and object puppetry. “For the past several years, I have worked diligently on designing this show, and I’m very anxious to share it for the first time with my community. This show not only represents a brand new production for Teatro SEA, but also symbolizes my own progression and growth as an actor over the past 25 years. I feel this production represents perfectly both mine and Teatro SEA’s success in theatre, music, acting, puppetry, and most of all, addressing the importance of cultural identity to Latino children and families in NYC” said by Dr. Manuel A. Morán, Founder and Artistic Director of the Society of the Educational Arts, Inc. (SEA.) A creative team has been recruited of which includes head team members, José López, SEA’s award winning puppet master and designer and UNIMA citation winner, who designed and built the puppets, sets, and costumes; guest designer, Deborah Hunt, a master puppeteer, mask maker and expert in political puppet and mask theatre from New Zealand who has been based in Puerto Rico for the past 25 years; and lighting designer Lucrecia Briceño. Under the artistic direction of Dr. Morán, they will be using a monochromatic color palette to highlight the wood and earthiness of Pinocho’s frame. Sound Designer, David Lawson, and Musical Director, Harold Gutiérrez, have developed a complimentary musical score, achieving a performance of excellent quality. ¡Viva Pinocho!, a Mexican Pinocchio, will be playing from December 4 – 13 at Pregones Theatre in the Bronx with shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm. School performances will be available during the week at 10:30am. The World Premiere and Opening Night will be on Friday, December 4th at 8pm.
