The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York and NYU’s Creative Writing in Spanish series present: ![]() Queer literatures in Mexico, reflections on its practices: authors of Quimera editions Round table presentation of authors published by the Mexican publishing house Quimera The authors Odette Alonso, Nayar Rivera, Sergio Tellez-Pon, Juan Carlos Bautista and José Dimayuga will present their work and review the state of queer literature in Mexico, and discuss their creative processes. Quimera was established in 2007 as the first Spanish-language queer publishing house in Mexico. It is devoted to publishing texts of undeniable literary value that are not circumscribed to sexual and gender-related themes but that incorporate other aspects of queer linguistics and literature. In the Mexican publishing and literary world, Quimera has established itself as the premier queer publishing house, gathering for the first time authors from different cultural and political backgrounds, and of various generations and literary affiliations. Quimera has published works by some of the most important contemporary Mexican authors, such as Luis Zapata, author of the legendary novel The Vampire of Colonia Roma, the renowned novelist and journalist Luis González de Alba, and José Joaquin Blanco, the prolific author of more than 45 titles in many genres. About the authors: Odette Alonso Ms. Alonso was born in Santiago de Cuba and lives in México since 1992. She is a poet and narrator, with eight published poetry volumes, a collection of short stories, and a novel, Espejo de tres cuerpos (Mirror of three bodies), published by Quimera. Her work has been included in several poetry and narrative anthologies. Her work has also been published in literary magazines and on internet literary sites. She compiled the anthology Las cuatro puntas del pañuelo. Poetas cubanos del exilio y la diáspora. (The four corners of the handkerchief. Cuban poets from the exile and diaspora), which was awarded the international poetry prize “Nicolás Guillén”. Juan Carlos Bautista Mr. Bautista is the author of three volumes of poetry, and his work has been published in different anthologies of contemporary Mexican poetry. He has been twice awarded a grant from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts. Quimera has published his volume of poetry Lenguas en erección (Erected tongues), and will publish in the near future his first collection of aphorisms. José Dimayuga Mr. Dimayuga is a playwright and novelist. Some of his plays have won Mexican prizes such as the National Drama Award for his play Afectuosamente, su comadre (With love, your friend). His first novel was published in 2007. Mr. Dimayuga is a grantee from the Mexico’s National Art Creators System, coordinates the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival: New gazes, New Spheres). Quimera published three of his plays in the anthology Triple Función (Triple feature). Nayar Rivera Nayar Rivera is a poet, narrator, essayist, literary critic, and journalist. Quimera published his poetry volume Reglas de urbanidad (Rules of Urbanity). His work has also been widely published by Mexican journals and newspapers. He has developed and executed several award-winning performance pieces, as well as the cabaret piece Somos no obvios (We are not obvious) about the post-gay scene in Mexico. Mr. Rivera is currently writing a book on the cultural parallels between Mexico and the United States, and is working on his second volume of poetry. Sergio Téllez-Pon Sergio Téllez-Pon is a poet, essayist, literary critic, narrator, editor and screenwriter. He is the Editor in Chief of Quimera. Some of his work has been translated to French and Portuguese, and is also included in several anthologies. He compiled and edited an anthology of homoerotic poetry published in 2006. He is currently writing his first novel and the screenplay for his second short film.
