 2010 In 2010, Mexico will commemorate the bicentennial of its Independence movement and the centennial of its Revolution with an extensive program of events. All Mexicans and foreign citizens alike are invited to participate in these events to learn about and reflect on Mexico’s past. These celebrations are not just about remembering important dates; they are about reviving the values and ideals that shaped our nation. Our goal is to give a modern meaning to our history. The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York will be presenting the following events: :: VISUAL ARTS :: December 11 2009 - March 1, 2010 GABRIEL OROZCO EXHIBITION Museum of Modern Art The exhibit will feature a wide selection of Gabriel Orozco's work that includes his paintings, drawings and small objects. The Institute is organizing a conference, panel discussion and an audiovisual projection. February 23, 2010 MURALISM WITHOUT WALLS Americas Society Presentation of the book Muralism Without Walls: Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros in the United States by art historian Anna Indych López. Art historian Renato González Melo and art critic Robert Storr will also participate. July 1 - September 15, 2010 FANTASTIC ZOOLOGY Instituto Cervantes Exhibition of ink drawings and watercolors by Francisco Toledo inspired by the text "Manual de Zoología Fantástica" written by Jorge Luis Borges. In collaboration with the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ganería Arvil. September 15, 2010 - January 9, 2011 NARRATIVE FOR NEW YORK Historical Society of New York and El Museo del Barrio Exhibition on the history and evolution of relations between New York City and the Hispanic world resulting from the migration of this community in the past 400 years. The script, based on the investigation by historian Mike Wallace, aims to expose the development of the Hispanic community in this city as well as the impact of its presence. November 6 - December 18, 2010 SHATTERED GLASS: RETHINKING THE MUSEO DE ARTE CARRILLO GIL COLLECTION Americas Society Exhibition integrated by works from the Carrillo Gil Museum collection of muralists José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Sequeiros, among others. With the support of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. November 2010 THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, Photographs by Luis Marquez Queens Museum of Art Exhibition curated by Itala Schmelz of over 80 photographs by Luis Márquez taken during the Mexico Pavillon of New York's World's Fair in 1940. High resolution digital reproductions of the original negatives will be exhibited alongside documents of the Queens Museum as well as various archives and news clippings from Mexico and the US. With the collaboration of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Carrillo Gil Art Museum. September 9 - November 13, 2010 PAUL STRAND IN MEXICO Aperture Gallery Exhibition that will showcase the ample work of photographer Paul Strand during his time in Mexico in the 1930s. 200 photographs and 100 engravings make up the exhibit who will feature a catalog with an essay by historian James Krippner. :: PERFORMING ARTS:: March 5 - 7, 2010 LA MALINCHE 92Y Tribeca New theater production of the ballet La Malinche about the history and the myth of this important character during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. With the performance of dancers from The Limón Dance Company and choreography by José Limón. Music by Norman lloyd. February 4, 2010, 2010 LIMON DANCE COMPANY Americas Society Panel discussion on the most important accomplishments and projects of The Limón Dance Foundation. September 16 -30, 2010 CELEBRATE MEXICO NOW FESTIVAL Seventh edition of the first, and only annual festival of contemporary Mexican art and culture in New York City. Encompassing cuisine, dance, film, literature, music, theater, and visual art, Celebrate México Nowprovides New York City with a glimpse of the most intriguing artists and ideas pouring out of Mexico today. March 31, 2010 A TRILATERAL READING: INDIGENOUS WRITERS FROM MEXICO, CANADA AND U.S. Americas Society Lecture by three writers from Mexico, Canada and the U.S. whose work has focused mainly on indigenous themes. April 15, 2010 MEXICAN LITERATURE IN THE AGE OF OBAMA Americas Society Mexican contemporary writers will discuss the state of literary production in Mexico in the current social and political conditions. May 6, 2010 THE BEATS AND MEXICO Americas Society Panelists will discuss the influence of Mexico in the production of the work by some American writers who belong to the beat generation. Such writers include Burroughs and Kerouac who traveled extensively through the Mexican Republic and others like Corso who spent long periods in Mexico. LOS QUE SE QUEDAN New York premiere of the acclaimed Mexican documentary made by filmmakers Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Hagerman. The directors will be present at the screening. June 2010 HOLA MEXICO FILM FESTIVAL In 2008, the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York along with promoter Samuel Douek programmed the Hola Mexico Film Festival in New York. In 2009 the festival was also presented in Los Angeles and Chicago and in 2010 it will expand to Washington, D. C. and Miami. This year's festival will include films related to the Bicentennial of the Mexican Independence. September & October 2010 MEXICAN FILM SERIES Instituto Cervantes Five Mexican films will be screened at the Instituto Cervantes every Wednesday starting in September.
